“Minis vs. Loughborough and
Aylestone, and
U14’s vs. Mansfield”
The
Under-7’s sponsored by Hinckley Round Table were
entertained by Loughborough RFC on a warm and pleasant Sunday
morning during which Hinckley were able to demonstrate the
progress that they have been steadily making throughout the
season. Hinckley yet again fielded two teams. The Lions and The
Tigers capped some fine results this morning with some solid
individual performances, most notably from Sharkey who scored an
amazing ten tries and Chenery who managed to end up with seven
tries throughout the morning.
In
the Lions first game a positive result was achieved in a 30-20 win
after three tries from Chenery, two from Nixon and one from
Lockett. The Lions second game resulted in a 20-20 draw with tries
each from Chenery, Hall-Crowfoot, Nixon and Upton.
The
Tigers managed to squeeze in three matches winning their first one
by 35 points to 25 after four tries from Sharkey, two from
Ellershaw and one from Upton. The second game finished in a 40
points to 25 deficit with all five of Hinckley’s tries coming from
Sharkey. The final game ended in the honours being shared after a
30-30 draw with The Tigers running in a total of six tries
courtesy of three from Chenery, two from Ellershaw and one from
Sharkey. All in all, a morning where Hinckley showed what they can
achieve after working hard all season.
Hinckley’s
Under 8’s sponsored by O'Hanlon & Skinner, also travelled
to Loughborough this weekend. In an evenly matched and flowing
first game, Hinckley were just edged out by Loughborough. Cavanagh,
Gibson and Lewis scored the points for Hinckley. Loughborough 25 -
Hinckley 15.
The
next match proved to be a thrilling end-to-end encounter with
Loughborough finishing ahead. Babb scored three times for Hinckley
with Jordan crossing the line twice. The other points for Hinckley
came from Gibson and Spencer. Loughborough 45 - Hinckley 35
The
third match was another close and hard fought game with
Loughborough forging ahead in the second half. Cavanagh and Jordan
scored three apiece for Hinckley. Loughborough 45 - Hinckley 30
The
final match was another tight and thrilling game with good support
play by both teams, ending in a well-deserved draw, Loughborough
30 - Hinckley 30. Cavanagh scored three times, with the other
points coming from Gibson, B Gummery and Spencer.
Hinckley
Under 10’s sponsored by AMG, Thermoskin and 600 Services,
fielded Bees and Hornets teams this weekend against Loughborough &
Aylestone St James.
Hinckley
Bees started well against Aylestone powering their way up field,
winning a scrum from which Hughes found a gap to run in the first
try. Bees continued to control the game their second try started
with Reeves doing some great rucking, allowing Tuffin to run in
the try. 2 further tries from Tuffin and Steele saw Bees win
convincingly 20 - 0. Man of the match was Tuffin &
Tackler of the match was Ames.
Bees
second match against Loughborough was a game of two halves with
Hinckley bossing the first half and scoring twice. Both tries
coming from powerful forward play. Ames scrambling through
Loughborough Defence to score first and Reeves with a determined
dive over the line. Loughborough came out fighting in the second
half firmly keeping Bees defending in their final third of the
pitch. On the final play of the match Loughborough were rewarded
with a well deserved try of their own but Bees did enough to win
the match 10 - 5. Man of the match was Steele and
Tackler of the match was Bevan.
Hornets
played Loughborough twice, in their first match the Hornets
started well but as the game wore on the Hornets began to miss too
many tackles. This allowed Loughborough the chance they needed to
capitalise which they did scoring 4 quick tries and to win the
match 20 points to 0. Man of the match was Thomas and
Tackler of the match was Castle
The
Hornets final match was their best performance all season, this
time they played as a unit everyone making their tackles, with the
half time score Loughborough just edging the score 5 nil up. The
Hornets continued to pressure Loughborough but just couldn’t turn
that pressure into a try they deserved, as the game came to a
close Loughborough added two more tries to win 15 points to 0.
Man of the match was Downes and Tackler of the match
was Higginson.
Hinckley
Under 11’s, sponsored by TMS Volvo and J&H Construction
also played at Loughborough, waking up the opposition with an
early try from Ruskin. A tough battle ensued with Loughborough
keen to get back in the game, keeping the ball in the Hinckley
half through aggressive forwards work. Hinckley defences were
tested to the limit with Loughborough finally breaking through
just before half time levelling the score at 5 - 5. Words of
encouragement from the coaches revitalised the team for the second
half and even though Loughborough scored again, the team drove
forward with a strong performance culminating with Ruskin crossing
the line off the back of a maul. Loughborough were straight back
at the Hinckley try line from the re-start with heavy rucking &
mauling from the Hinckley side getting the ball to Atkinson, who
ran the full length of the pitch to score a try, with Nixon
finishing off a successful conversion. Final score Hinckley 17 –
Loughborough 10. Man of the Match went to Orton for
consistent positional discipline and commitment.

A
shortened development match then followed against an Aylestone St
James mixed team. As Aylestone pressure quickly pushed Hinckley
back onto their own touchline, Tuilagi performed a try saving kick
up the field keeping Hinckley in the clear. Hinckley were quick to
pounce on the change in fortunes with Nixon darting up the field
passing the ball to Tuilagi who, with excellent team support,
drove the ball over the whitewash. Ruskin converted. At the
re-start Aylestone monopolised on their lads larger size with a
quick return try, but were unable to convert. Hinckley were
straight back at Aylestone and though valiant in getting to their
try line were denied points for fending off. In the final play of
the game Hinckley were forced to concede a try to the persistent
Aylestone who in turn converted, making the final score
Aylestone12 – Hinckley 7. Man of the Match went to Addison
for showing great potential on his first outing for the team.
The
Williams Recycling and Promet Steel sponsored Under 14’s
faced Mansfield this weekend with a mixed squad and despite an
early Hinckley break, they were caught out by a Mansfield return
break going ahead 7-0. An end-end game quickly developed and with
Hinckley’s pack starting to function as a unit, a Walsh try
finished off some great attacking play. Hinckley pressure and
flowing back line play started to open Mansfield up as Cull
finished off a backs run with another score 7-10. Mansfield was
dangerous on the attack and pinched another converted score 14-10.
After the break, Hinckley pressure forced Mansfield errors and a
quick penalty break by Lally notched up another Hinckley score
14-15. With the clock running down and Hinckley expecting the
final whistle, another late Mansfield break, just beat the
Hinckley defences pinching a final converted score 21-15. A
determined Hinckley team then tried their best to snatch the lead
back, but despite some great attacking play and teamwork, with the
‘kitchen sink’ thrown in as well, Mansfield just held on, however
the Hinckley team have at last started to demonstrate their will
to win and ability to ‘turn it on’, as they look forward to a
strong end of season finish.
