“U16’s win County Plate as Minis take on Rugby St Andrews and
U14’s in action against Syston and Burton”

Hinckley Under 16’s, sponsored by J&H Construction Ltd, won their County Plate Final Hinckley 10 - Oadby Wyggs 7.
In an enthralling match where both sides suffered from appalling conditions, a very strong wind and a pitch of glue restricting free running, Hinckley took an early lead when Rooney charged down a kick enabling Plant to react and secure the first score. This sparked Oadby Wyggs into life and they took the next quarter of the game, securing a try and conversion to take a halftime lead.
After the turn around, Oadby dominated the possession and ground but failed to improve their lead. Hinckley then gained the ball in mid field and their forwards led a 30 metre drive into the Oadby 22; they then had a series of drives being held up with attacking scrums until No 8 Morris picked up and grabbed the winning score in the corner. This lead to Hinckley holding out in defence for the remanding 5 minutes for a win. This was a trophy that this year group has never achieved in the 15-a-side game before, showing their improvement over the last 12 months. Nothing should be taken away from Oadby, whose defence was magnificent but Hinckley managed to break it twice and defend brilliantly themselves.

Meanwhile, the Hinckley Minis were also in action. The Under 7’s sponsored by Hinckley Round Table were in strong form against Rugby St Andrews, despite a cold and wet morning, and yet again fielded two strong teams, the Lions and Tigers.
The Lions opening game saw an impressive haul of tries in a fast and flowing game full of enthusiasm and skill from all the players. Delo and Ellerhsaw notched up a try a piece; Lockett, Nixon and Sharkey earned 2 each; with a sensational Morrissey in unstoppable top form scoring a double hat-trick (6). The visitors were continually held back with excellent tagging from all the team especially Morrissey and Delo. Rugby managed 6 tries in return in this try-feast, however 4 of these were score by Hinckley’s Thorpe on loan to the visitors.
The second game saw the Hinckley Tigers continue to dominate proceedings from start to finish running out easy 60-15 winners. Impressive teamwork was clearly evident with every Hinckley player getting on the score sheet. Chenery 2, Dalby 3, Delo 2, Hall-Crowfoot 1,Nixon 2, Thorpe 1 & Upton 1. Once again a Hinckley loan player assisted the visitors with Sharkey 1.

Hinckley Under 8’s sponsored by O'Hanlon & Skinner, also started in fine form against Rugby St Andrews, winning Hinckley 45 - Rugby St Andrews 35. There were three tries each for Rickels and Roan with the other points coming from Babb, Cavanagh and Moore.
The second match was another flowing game with some good passing from both teams. Hinckley again came out on top with four tries from Jordan and three from Massarella. Gibson and Rickels also crossed the line for Hinckley. Hinckley 45 - Rugby St Andrews 30.

Hinckley Under 10’s sponsored by AMG, Thermoskin and 600 Services, fielded Bees and Hornets teams this weekend against Rugby St Andrews.
Bees started strongly and quickly took the lead with some great link up play allowing Baker to score. St Andrews quickly equalised with a good try of their own but at the break Bees snatched the lead back with a try from James.
Rugby evened the game up catching the Bees napping but from then Hinckley dominated possession and the match winning 25 points to 10. Another try for Baker and 1 each for Reeves and Stretton. Man of the match for an outstanding performance went to Ames Tackler of the match was James.
Hornets match was a closely fought affair both teams making some big tackles Rugby though finding a gap to take an early lead. Hornets came fighting back with a great try from Ward but at half time Rugby St Andrews had slid another try in to lead. Rugby added another try to lead 15 -5 but the Hornets hadn’t given up Griffiths taking the ball in his own half ran powerfully through St Andrews defence for a great individual try. Griffiths wasn’t finished there. On the final play Griffiths picked up the loose ball to find his way past St Andrews to score and level the match 15 – 15 for a deserved draw. Man of the match was Griffiths for his determination and Tackler of the match was Chenery for some try stopping tackles.

Hinckley Under 11’s, sponsored by TMS Volvo and J&H Construction, started resolutely against Rugby St Andrews, with a dominating pack but were unable to pierce a desperate Saints defence, until an overlap gave Atkinson a clear sprint to open the scoring with the conversion by Brown. Atkinson scored again just before half time with a tough run through the Saints line. Hinckley pressure continued in the second half with a series of attacking phases culminating in a try from a mazy run by Bowler, which was converted by Sephton. This was followed by an attacking run from Atkinson who crossed the whitewash for his hat-trick. Brown added to his earlier two-pointer with five more from a try in the corner, which was converted by Nixon. In the dying moments Saints launched their strongest attack of the match but were denied by Hinckley clearing into touch as the clock ran out. Final score Hinckley 31 - Saints 0 with Man of the Match going to Howkins for a strong and effective game, playing prop for the first time. With thanks to Addison, McMurran and Orton for stalwart efforts on loan to an under strength Saints side.

Hinckley Under 12’s, sponsored by Nextgen Rigging, entertained Rugby St Andrews last week-end, and after a fairly comfortable win earlier in the season the home side were a little bit complacent. After early pressure T Bexon and B Harkness put Hinckley10 points to the good and from here the result was just a formality.
Unfortunately nobody told Rugby St Andrews the plot! And a spirited second half fight back saw them close the gap after quick hands and poor tackling let the visitors in for a try.
This fired up the Rugby lads who then saw the opportunity to get back on level terms, or even win the game, and it was only a series of try saving tackles from R Faulkener and W Hayter at full back that denied Rugby their equaliser.
At the final whistle it was a very close run thing, and despite the poor pitch conditions the youngsters held on for a very hard earned victory, they will surely have learned not to take their previous experiences of teams for granted.  Final Score Hinckley 10 Rugby St Andrews 5.

The Williams Recycling and Promet Steel sponsored Under 14’s had a near full squad turnout for two games this weekend. A Development team faced a strong Syston team first, and despite some very good performances from new players struggled to break through the Syston defences but showed character, despite a 7-39 result, with Lally scoring the Hinckley try and conversion. With further games in planning, the team will soon be working as a unit much more effectively, and challenging for positions.
Hinckley’s main team had a point to prove in the next match against Burton, and opened strongly with good forwards and backs supporting play. Despite some weaknesses, which the team still need to work on, Hinckley finished with a 30-10 score-line, with tries by Bresland, Cull (2), Redhead, Cook and Tom, with Cull picking up the day’s Man of the Match award.
